The layout of 16-element Kongō Gumi changes four times before returning to its original starting position. Using any of these four layouts as the starting position yields the exact same design in Kongō. However, if you change the Kongō interlacement to that of Naiki, a surprise occurs: two different designs can be created depending on which Kongō Gumi layout is used. Likewise, if the clockwise and counterclockwise steps are repeated twice in each direction, a third and fourth design occurs.
